Off grid solar homes are starting to gain popularity, especially because of environmental concerns as well as rising electricity bills.
A few years back, only hippies were living off grid. Nowadays, however, there are quite a number of regular families who have discovered that solar energy can completely provide for their everyday needs. In fact, some people now even make their own solar panels.

The main reason why you should consider living in an off grid solar home is to help the environment. If you have kids, then you should care about the future that is ahead of them. I decided to go off grid primarily because I want my daughters to live in a clean and stable environment. I do not want to expose them to smog and pollution, as well as suffer the consequences of global warming simply because I am lazy enough to try to find ways to generate power using solar and wind energy.
It is important to note that solar energy’s eco-footprint is small (and even negligible) compared to that of fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal. Besides, the sun is expected to be there for us for a couple million years more so you do not have to worry about depleting solar energy.
It is true that investing in an off grid solar home is quite expensive. If you want to buy commercially manufactured wind turbines and solar panels, you should be ready to shell out thousands of dollars for batteries, inverters and other devices. However, you can take advantage of the energy savings that result from living in an off grid home for years.
So, do not think of the money you spent for solar panels and wind power generators as outright expense. Think of it as an investment. In the long run, you will see that the money you saved from electricity can be used for bigger purposes.
Almost all homes can actually be converted to off grid solar homes. All you need is a good design so that you will be able to maximize the use of solar energy. Even if you live in an apartment, it should not prevent you from harnessing the power of the sun.
There are small solar panels that you can invest in. You may not live off the grid yet with small solar panels, but at least, you are already reducing your impact on the environment in your own little way.
